Sonoma County: News and Notes

As it looks like we are close to (if not at the end of the Wet Season), we can wrap up where things came out. First off, the reservoir levels are good in Northern California and get worse as you head South. The same is true of the snowpack from 97% of normal in the North to 72% in the South. So we are not out of the woods yet, but we are in such better shape than last year that there is almost no comparison.

Recently, I spoke to Erica Thomas. Erica is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with an office in Rohnert Park.

Jim Sackman: Hi Erica, what can you tell me about who should consider using your services? Erica Thomas: Thanks Jim, there are lots of reasons to visit a Therapist. What I like to ask: Is there something keeping you up at night? Has it been doing so for a long time? That kind of thing helps people understand that they have a long term or chronic issue that needs to be worked. If it has been keeping you up for months, then it is it is time to think about figuring out how to get rid of it.

JS: Anything else? ET: There are a lot of my clients who have felt like something is wrong, but they have not been able to figure out what it was. They just felt wrong or they couldn't focus. It often takes time to break down the barriers to uncovering what is wrong and helping people get back on track. Sometimes they can't do it on their own and they need someone to help guide them through the process.

JS: That sounds like a big job. ET: Many people avoid therapy because it can be scary and they can be afraid of being judged. I try to create a safe place for them to understand themselves better and help them get to a good outcome. Therapy can be very hard work depending on the problem. But the most important thing is that my clients know that I support them and will not judge them.

JS: Do you any specialty services? ET: I have three specialties. The first is easy. As a native Spanish speaker, I am able to help the Latino community in a way that many other therapists can't. Secondly, I help people with Eating Disorders. Those can come from a very painful place in the person's life. Finally, I love to work with kids.

JS: Kids need help? ET: Sometimes, they do. Not everybody grows up like the Cleaver's and divorce is a growing problem for kids. They have anxiety about the family and are often in the middle between Mom and Dad. There are worse family situations as well, but divorce is a very common problem.

JS: Any last comments? ET: When people have tried everything else, they should come visit me. There is hope and there is victory. If they are willing to work with me, they will feel and be better.

So, there it is. If you know of anyone who could use help, have them give Erica Thomas a call.
